Poco Fino
Buen día, ¿cómo
están todos?
The problem with this blogpost is where to start: I have
been here a month and everything has gone great. My work hours are long but the what I am
doing is mentally stimulating and incredibly fulfilling. I have been in the newspaper three times for
attending events. I shadowed almost every section and gotten a taste for what I would like to do with my future. I met some very important Paraguayan people and enhanced my ability for small talk. My coworkers are
amazing; being that it is the World Cup, my cubicle-mates and I have it
constantly streaming in the conference room. Our supervisor has become aware of our “little
distraction” because if we hear his voice, we immediately desert to our
cubicles.Some of my coworkers are
infuriated that I was not provided housing or given clear instructions upon
arrival (nothing bad happened, I survived – they just assumed I would have been
taken care of more because that is how they are treated) and took me in,
literally. They offered me places to
stay and now I am taking up their spare rooms.
Paraguay has its own charms as well. It is definitely a place to choose your own adventure but if you dig
deep enough, you will strike gold (figuratively and literally; there is a gold
belt in the middle of the country). My
weekends are spent wandering the streets of Asuncion, checking out a new part
of the city, hopping in a coworkers’ car to be taken somewhere interesting, and
most importantly: relaxing. After a long
week, laying in a hammock and reading is the best thing I can do. Not only that, but at home I am constantly
being pulled away to do some and I don’t relax (note to self: this must change).
There are few things that I would change about my experience
here thus far; most notably the lack of recycling and access to coffee, and fresh produce. Paraguay is a meat and bread culture which are
both things that are not commonly found in my diet (bye-bye vegetarianism, see
you in August). However, the meat is delicious
as long as it is not coming from places like this:
Anyways, if you need me, you know how to get a hold of me.
Besitos.
